Thanks to everyone for comments both on and off the COMCIFS list on the revised policy draft. I shall in a few moments circulate a new version both to this list and to the cif-developers list, and by so doing invite a response from the wider community. The main differences from the previous version circulated here are: (1) the broadening of the scope of the document to include the STAR file format explicitly; (2) dropping the explicit clause detailing the rights of the author of the data, and replacing it instead by a statement that the intellectual property rights claimed "relate solely to the interchange formats..." This was done on legal advice, but with no suspect motive - it's just that the author's rights exist already and require no elaboration in a document such as this. A number of other small refinements have been suggested by informal legal contacts, but do not affect the substance of the draft and shall be held in reserve until the final drafting stage. For now, it is time to post this in a public forum and see how the world greets it. Best wishes Brian
