EUROPEAN SYNCHROTRON RADIATION FACILITY

INSTALLATION EUROPEENNE DE RAYONNEMENT SYNCHROTRON

ESRF, Personnel Service - Recruitment

BP 220, F-38043 Grenoble Cedex 9, FRANCE

ESRF

The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 18 countries

mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments)

covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and

environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. Research at the ESRF is carried out by

several thousand external users each year from universities, public research laboratories and industry, and by

the ESRF's own scientists. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.

The working language of the ESRF is English.

The Experiments Division designs, constructs and runs the ESRF experimental stations (= beamlines).

Within this division, the Soft-Condensed Matter group is now seeking to recruit a:

Beamline Scientist (m/f)

for the Small-Angle Scattering Beamline (ID02)

Beamline ID2 is a SAXS/WAXS/USAXS facility primarily dedicated to soft condensed matter research.

These scattering techniques are combined with a variety of advanced sample environments to study the

equilibrium microstructure and non-equilibrium dynamics in soft matter and biological systems.

THE FUNCTION:

You will be co-responsible for the sustained development and maintenance of the instrument which is

essential to meet the high expectations. One of the planned developments is to explore complimentary

imaging techniques in the ultra small angle range which would facilitate a convergence of scattering and

imaging methods. ID2 has a very strong user program spanning many scientific disciplines. You will need to

provide support to external users in the form of local contact. Furthermore, you will be expected to develop

an independent and original research program in soft matter or a related field that exploits high brilliance

SAXS, WAXS and USAXS techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

You should have a Ph.D. in Physics / Chemistry / Biology or a closely related subject and several years of

postdoctoral research experience. Previous experience in SAXS, WAXS and USAXS techniques is required.

You should have adequate skills in instrumentation. Some aptitude in programming and data analysis are

highly desirable.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The ESRF shares a site with other major European scientific institutes (ILL, EMBL); it offers an

exciting opportunity in an international atmosphere. New staff coming from outside the Grenoble

area benefit from installation allowances. An expatriation allowance may be payable in accordance

with specific regulations. Appointment is for a fixed period of up to 5 years, and should start as

soon as possible. Further information about this post can be obtained from T. Narayanan (tel.: (33) 4 76 88

21 21, email: narayan@esrf.fr).

If you are interested, please send a fax (+33 (0)4 76 88 24 60) or an e-mail (recruitm@esrf.fr <mailto:recruitm@esrf.fr> )

with your address, and we will provide you with an application form. Or print out an

application form on the World Wide Web http://www.esrf.fr/ . In addition to the application

form, you should provide us with a detailed CV and the names of two referees.

Ref. 2170 - Deadline for returning application forms: ASAP

Applications received after the deadline may be considered for the selected vacancy if not filled or for future similar positions.
