Laboratoire Europeen de Biologie Moleculaire European Molecular Biology Laboratory Europaisches Laboratorium fuer Molekularbiologie EMBL/V/03/71 July 2003 VACANCY NOTICE Member States of EMBL (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) are advised that applications are being sought for the following position at the Hamburg Outstation. The EMBL Hamburg Outstation carries out extensive research in structural biology, largely based on the use of synchrotron radiation at DESY. The activities include technology and methods developments in X-ray crystallography, Small Angle X-ray Scattering and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, and a wide spectrum of biological research projects. EMBL Hamburg operates seven synchrotron beamlines that are available to the international user community and to in-house research activities. The unit is involved in the design of new, state-of-the- art synchrotron radiation beamlines for life science applications at the PETRA ring that will become operational in 2007. STAFF SCIENTIST IN BIOLOGICAL SMALL ANGLE X-RAY SCATTERING Grade : 8 Duty Station : Hamburg, Germany Commencing Date :As soon as possible after closing date Job Description :We are seeking a scientist who will play a critical role in the Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) research activity at EMBL-Hamburg. The postholder will be involved in scientific maintenance (development of the beamline facilities, methods and technology) and external user support on the biological SAXS synchrotron radiation beamline at the DORIS storage ring at DESY. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the planning of a new biological SAXS beamline at the PETRA storage ring (in collaboration with the local instrumentation group). There will be opportunities to link independent but related research activities with the operation of the beamline. The post will be associated with the current SAXS team of Dr. Dmitri Svergun. Qualifications Applicants should have PhD in a relevant field, and Experience: sufficient record of independent research, significant scientific accomplishments and expertise in structure analysis of biological macromolecules using diffraction methods. Previous experience in hardware and/or software development for synchrotron radiation beamlines would be advantageous. Excellent communication skills and ability to supervise and collaborate in international team environment will be essential. Contract: An initial contract of 3 years' duration will be offered to the successful candidate. This may be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
