------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Statistics on Electronic Library Resources The [US] Association of Research Libraries has been publishinbg what they call their "Supplementary Statistics" from Member libraries since 1995. The 2000-01 data has just been published. The highlights: HIGHLIGHTS; ARL SUPPLEMENTARY STATISTICS 2000-01 • Expenditures for Electronic Resources account for 16.25%, on average, of ARL institutions’ Library Materials Budgets. • ARL libraries reported spending more than $132 million on electronic resources. • ARL libraries reported a total of $14.66 million in additional funds spent on their behalf through a centrally funded consortium for purchasing electronic products and services. • ARL libraries reported spending more than $12.6 million on document delivery/interlibrary loan services. • Expenditures for electronic serials have increased by 75% in the last two years alone, and by almost 900% since they were first reported, in 1994-95. • In every year since 1992-93, average expenditures on electronic resources have increased at least twice as fast, and in some cases up to six times faster, than average library materials expenditures The first highlight is in my view one of th most interesting. It goes against the general 'feeling' that electronic materials are taking over..... However the third highlight, on consortium buying, is also interesting as is the data on document delivery. The full report (pdf) is at: http://www.arl.org/stats/pubpdf/sup01.pdf ------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Review of peer review The [UK] Royal Society is to launch a wide-ranging consultation among scientists, the media, and the public next month, into the best way to communicate the results of original research. In the spotlight will be an issue central to the practice of science-the peer review process.
