The CNRP hopes to provide an easy way for individuals to search and resolve common or brand names - providing that the proper protocol syntax is used, and that the source is a registered name. For instance, keying in "White House" will bring you to the official homepage, even if the searcher doesn't realize it is a .gov domain, and will prevent the user from accidentally going to the .net spoof of the homepage. This technology is excellent for search engines but, except for registered trademark holders, does not resolve the issue of domain problems. Netword (http://www.netword.com) is one company that has moved into the field of registering these names, but its listings have many flaws. The company states that it has registered the names of companies found in major listings such as Dun and Bradstreet and government entities for free and will let companies and individuals pay ($30.00 per year) to register other "networds". This leads to the same sort of inaccurate results you find when trying to guess full URL's or using a weighted-by-ad-revenue search engine, only with less typing. If you try the "netword" "caterpillar" you're taken to the homepage of the Caterpillar Tractor Co. You are also taken to this page if you enter the word, "cat". The word "cats" takes you to a Persian cat breeder's homepage on Geocities. If you try "television" you go to the Yahoo TV coverage section, and "thoroughbred" resolves to GreekInternet.com. There is a way for trademark holders to dispute another site being registered for their "networds", but no mechanism is in place that we could discover to dispute the ones listed above. In other words, they lead to the same type of misdirected searches that are typical today. And if you type a word that has not been registered, even if most people would consider it a brand name, Networds offers the searcher a chance to be the first to register an internet keyword or phrase. "Coor" or "Coors Brewing" provides a list of suggested links, with a notice by the Coors Brewing Co. link that this is a free "netword" that may be registered; "Coors" has apparently already been registered as it takes you to the site for Monkey Sounds Music. As mentioned above, this technology provides a worthwhile enhancement to search engines and a tool to circumvent cybersquatters; it does not appear to provide any substantial resolution to issues concerning top level domains.
