* EU TO SUE FIVE NATIONS ON PRIVACY PROTECTIONS The European Union plans to sue five European nations -- France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg -- claiming that they failed to comply with the EU's Data Protection Directive. The directive gives citizens a bundle of rights that protects their personal information, allowing them to know when information such as their credit ratings or political leanings are disclosed. The directive also prevents such data from being sent to countries that the EU believes to have inadequate privacy protections. For that reason, the EU might sue the United States, as well, for not passing stronger laws against the dissemination of such data. Officials from the EU and the U.S. hope to reach a compromise by March. For more information see http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/000111/o0.html .
