  I have also had these misgivings with list servers. However listproc
seems to have made progress in this field. 
  Trying sending a few commands to the list epc_l itself. You'll see
that they are not distributed to the others and the person sending them
is politely told to write to listproc@iucr.org   Likewise listproc
filters "subjects" which should not be sent to a list like "test". I
find the soft rather comfortable but one needs to learn its ins and
outs.
