++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subject: New Verity Taxonomies use NLM and DTIC taxonomies Verity Inc., a leading provider of enterprise software announced the availability of its initial Verity Taxonomies, six customizable classification structures that will speed and simplify the organization and management of content in large-scale global enterprises. "Verity Taxonomies are the newest content organization enhancements that we are offering organizations with Verity K2 Enterprise software at the heart of their intellectual capital management systems to help them categorize information even faster, with greater ease and in a way that can yield more relevant search results," said Sunil D. Nagdev, senior vice president of professional services at Verity. "In creating these taxonomies, Verity drew on highly regarded and open source thesauri and industry standard taxonomies as well as the company's considerable experience in knowledge engineering, the process of building taxonomies." The six Verity Taxonomies are based on open industry standards, and built using the same query language used in Verity K2 Enterprise content organization products. Each of the taxonomies, together with Verity classification solutions that combine both automation and domain expertise, are designed to provide an enterprise's taxonomy project with a head start to deliver extremely accurate and relevant content organization to enhance the value of the enterprise's intellectual capital. More importantly, Verity Taxonomies are also customizable by customers to serve their unique business requirements, both enterprise-wide and departmental. Verity Taxonomies include: Verity Pharmaceutical Taxonomy -- The National Library of Medicine's MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) taxonomy has been converted to a Verity taxonomy file with Verity business rules. This open source resource is seen by experts as the industry standard. It is a comprehensive taxonomy with over 300,000 terms and topics such as "inorganic chemicals," "anatomy & physiology," "chemical actions," "amino acids, peptides, proteins," "therapeutics," and many more. Verity Defense Taxonomy -- The foundation of this taxonomy is the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) thesaurus published by the U.S.Department of Defense. It provides a multidisciplinary vocabulary that includes nearly 12,000 topics, such as "communications," "guided missile technology," "navigation," "detection" and "countermeasures." In addition, the DTIC thesaurus provides extensive information on general topics such as "chemistry," "physics," and "atmospheric sciences." Verity knowledge engineers have converted these into categories defined by Verity business rules to enable governmental and non-governmental organizations to take advantage of the years of the Department of Defense's expertise represented in the DTIC taxonomy. Verity Homeland Security Taxonomy -- Verity's knowledge engineers have built an extensive taxonomy covering virtually all security and homeland defense issues. Based on direct experience solving content organization issues for intelligence agencies in the U.S. and around the globe, this Verity taxonomy includes more than 700 categories on broad topics such as "foreign terrorist organizations," "weapons of mass destruction," and "border and transportation security," as well as narrower subjects like "passenger list," "cargo security," "biometric systems," and "contamination control." Verity Human Resources Taxonomy -- Verity engineered this taxonomy to provide an effective method of grappling with complexities of medical, dental and vision care benefits, personnel practices, privacy issues, salary management as well as risk management among other matters of concern to human resources departments or entire organizations. Verity Sales & Marketing Taxonomy -- This Verity-crafted taxonomy can allow organizations to bring more order and effectiveness to their selling processes. It is a collection of the full range of topics associated with sales and marketing, from product nomenclature, features and functions, rates or pricing, geographies, distribution arrangements and more. Verity Information Technology Taxonomy -- Targeted for companies offering IT products and services, this Verity-produced taxonomy gives engineers, sales and operations managers of a high tech company ready access to its internal and external information sources. It includes a wide variety of mission-critical IT topics, including operating systems, DSL, IT security and storage area networks. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subject: Press Release from CrossRef CrossRef Drops DOI Retrieval Fees As Steep Growth in Adoption Continues LYNNFIELD, MA -- November 14, 2003. CrossRef, the cross-publisher reference linking service, announced today that it will drop its DOI retrieval fees for all members and affiliates starting in January 2004. This move gives all CrossRef users unlimited access to DOIs, and is particularly significant for secondary publishers, as DOI links from citations and bibliographic databases to full text are expected to increase greatly as a result. The decision by the CrossRef Board to drop DOI retrieval fees is the latest strategic move intended to open access to the CrossRef system. In May of this year, CrossRef made library accounts on its system completely free. CrossRef integrates with the OpenURL, and several local linking platforms now incorporate it; these include ExLibris, Serials Solutions, SISIS, Endeavor, Fretwell Downing, SIRSI, and Openly Informatics. Fifty scholarly and professional publishers have signed on in the last six months to CrossRef, bringing the total members to 250. Several hundred thousand book and conference proceeding DOIs have been added to the CrossRef system, including 700 books from Oxford University Press. With these additions, CrossRef now covers over 8,700 journals and nearly 10 million individual content items.
