Status: R X-Status: N The National Library of Medicine has created a set of standards for publishing online journal articles in hopes of simplifying the process for publishing, transferring, and archiving scholarly information. The DTD's identify and encode various elements of an article, like a quotation, a bibliographic reference, or the start of a paragraph. "It's a standard model to allow the exchange of journal articles -- a model that we figure can handle any journal article out there," says Jeff Beck, a technical- information specialist at the medical library. "Say you have two groups that want to exchange articles, like one publisher wants to submit articles to an archive or collector. If they agree that they will both use this, then the publisher will tag the articles in this format, the archive will be able to read them." So far, no other organization has proposed standard formats for electronic journals, he says. At present, he adds, publishers have been using formats of their own creation. LEARY A group challenging the power of established scientific journals says legislation will be introduced to make the results of all federally financed research available to the public. The group, the Public Library of Science, which includes scientists, doctors, researchers and their public supporters, plans to announce legislation on Thursday that would give taxpayers greater access to scientific data. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/26/politics/26LIBR.html?ex=1057638190&ei=1 &en=24bfe95d73754002 Free access to registered readers /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Federally-Financed Librarian Iowa State University Ames IA 50011 *************************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------- -- Best wishes Peter Strickland Managing Editor IUCr Journals ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IUCr Editorial Office, 5 Abbey Square, Chester CH1 2HU, England Phone: 44 1244 342878 Fax: 44 1244 314888 Email: ps@iucr.org Ftp: ftp.iucr.org WWW: http://journals.iucr.org/ NEWSFLASH: Complete text of all IUCr journals back to 1948 now online!
