---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Another item on copyright.... Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 12:22:18 -0000 From: Barry Mahon <mahons1@EIRCOM.NET> To: ICSTI-L@DTIC.MIL Dear All, I know that IPR and such like is, for some, a boring subject, but here is a URL where you will find a new article from the Economist (UK), arguing for some changes as a result of the recent US Supreme Court decision on extension of the term. http://economist.com/opinion/displayStory.cfm?story_id=1547223 Bye, Barry -------------------------------- Another item on copyright.... (fwd) Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 13:55:18 +0000 From: Eamon Fennessy <efennessy@ATT.NET> To: ICSTI-L@DTIC.MIL Reply to: ICSTI-L list <ICSTI-L@DTIC.MIL> Barry et al: The Economist article on copyright is well-balanced but the thrust of it is that our US Supreme Court is somehow to blame for supporting a 70-year copyright term. What is forgotten in this is that we (the US) had a 50-year term until the EU decided it would go to 70 years and would only recognize the copyright term of those outside the EU according to the term in the country where the intellectual property was originally copyrighted. So, countries where the term of copyright was less than 70 years were out of luck unless they went to match the EU term. Copyright is vitally important to so many industries, not the least of which, are the scientific, publishing, and information dissemination industries.
