Dear All, At the Seminar on Digital Preservation in February 2002 one of the actions agreed was that there should be more encouragment to scientists to ensure that their work, however produced and distributed, is available for preservation. It was felt that many scientists did not perhaps appreciate the need, particularly in view of the many new means of publication, to have their work identified for long term availability. [The newer term for what we have been traditionally been referring to as "Digital Preservation" is Permanent Availability, which reflects more the need to ensure access as well as preservation] Subsequently the Executive Board arranged for David Russon to write a paper on the subject of Advocacy - to open the discussion on encouraging preservation and reviewing the issues. David submitted his draft to the Executive Board for the meeting in Stockholm and the Board agreed it should be opened up to all Members for their opinions. The document is now on the ICSTI Web site under the Member Services (name icsti, password stm99) Please try to read the document and let us have your views. It is designated as a "statement from ICSTI " and we would like to distribute the the final version widely as another indication of ICSTI's role in preserving the record of science. On the Member Services home page there is a button called Member Discussion Area which will take you to a section of the site where you may make your comments and see those of others. The Board is anxious to use this area for the discussion on David's paper so that the involvement and reaction can be a wide as possible. If you are not registered on the discussion area don't worry, you can register and then put in your message. The posting of your message will be notified to all others who are registered via email, so as comments are entered then everybody gets to know that and can read and react to them. If you have problems Mary Zborowski (mailto:mary.zborowski@nrc.ca) will be happy to help you. I hope you will take the time to read and react to the paper and that we can have a fruitful discussion. Thanks in advance, Barry Mahon --Boundary_(ID_Djj/MFtpAqBJy9YOYAfcbA)--
