Since one key to making a scientific archiving infrastructure viable is the
understanding and commitment of the scientific community, perhaps the
position should have this audience as a primary focus.

Subject: Preserving the Digital Records of Science

Following the ICSTI seminar on digital preservation held in Paris in Feb.
the Executive Board decided that ICSTI should prepare a position statement
to influence further the players involved including scientists and their
representative bodies,funding agencies,publishers,data centres and
libraries.Although the seminar revealed positive action by a number of
stakeholders it was recognised that more urgent, concerted actions were
required if the issues were to be fully addressed in an economic and
effective way.
I agreed to draft a statement for presentation to the Executive Board in
Stockholm.
In order to reflect the views of the membership I should welcome any
contributions you may like to make, particularly on the on the question of
who should be the key audience(s) for the ICSTI statement.
At the seminar Neil Beagrie gave some estimates for the amount of data that
specific disciplines are likely to generate in the near future.I have had
difficulty in tracing any authorative projections of future scientific data
output. If any members, particularly from CODATA and the Scientific Unions can
help with this then I shall be glad to hear from them.
I can be reached by reply to this message or at david.russon@papershed.com
Regards,David Russon
