NFAIS has just named Dan Duncan as Interim Executive Director (see details below). In addition, Larry Kohler, Executive Director of ICSU, will leave on 31.12.2001 to return to ILO Geneva. Kind regards Sarah -----Original Message----- From: NFAIS Listserv [mailto:NFAIS-L@LISTSERV.SILVERPLATTER.COM]On Behalf Of Margaret Manson Sent: 23 July 2001 16:22 To: NFAIS-L@LISTSERV.SILVERPLATTER.COM Subject: NFAIS Names Dan Duncan as Interim Executive Director NFAIS Names Dan Duncan as Interim Executive Director Philadelphia, PA - NFAIS (the National Federation of Abstracting and Information Services) today named Dan Duncan as Interim Executive Director of the organization, following the resignation in June of former Executive Director, Richard T. Kaser. Duncan assumes his new role as of August 1, 2001. NFAIS currently supports an active membership of more than 60 organizations and institutions, all part of a global information community. Formed in a post-Sputnik era with the intent of facilitating access to and dissemination of research, NFAIS has long been noted for its focus on research, education and community building in pursuit of that mission. Within the next few weeks, NFAIS embarks on a strategic planning process to identify new means of broadening the organization's appeal in today's information economy. "Dan's experience with the information community will be invaluable at this point in NFAIS' development. The NFAIS membership is diverse, encompassing as it does information providers from both public and private sectors," says Paul Ryan, Deputy Administrator of the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) and current NFAIS President. "The organization requires leadership from someone conversant with the many issues facing government agencies, scholarly societies, and commercial providers in the 21st century." -more- At its inception in 1958, members of the Federation included such key information providers as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Biological Abstracts (now BIOSIS), the American Psychological Association, Chemical Abstracts Services, and the Defense Documentation Center (now DTIC). All of these organizations remain NFAIS members to this day, but the 2001-2002 membership directory also includes such organizations as the Getty Research Institute, Elsevier Science, Ebsco Publishing, the American Theological Library Association and the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe, demonstrating the diversity of organizations that find NFAIS to be a valuable industry resource. Duncan, a private consultant since January 2000, brings particular expertise to the NFAIS organization in the areas of intellectual property, privacy protection, government information policy, electronic commerce, and contract law. Prior to beginning his own consulting business, Duncan served for one year as Vice President for Government Affairs at the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) - a recently formed trade group of the nation's leading software and database producers. SIIA was created from the merger of the former Software Publishers Association and the Information Industry Association (IIA). Dan was Senior Vice President for Government Relations at IIA from 1995-1998, responsible for managing public policy programs at the state, federal and international levels for that association's members. NFAIS membership includes more than 60 organizations from both the public and private sector who are content producers and aggregators. By facilitating retrieval of information in a variety of complex information settings, NFAIS member organizations serve highly specialized communities of users by enhancing access to and retrieval of high-value information and data across all fields of research and scholarship.
