NKOS is an= =20 ad hoc working group with over 70 members from 10 countries who are=20 interested in the use of knowledge organization systems/sources such as=20 thesauri, ontologies, classification schemes, etc. to organization and acces= s=20 information on the Internet and on intranets. -- Gail ----------------------------- APOLOGIES FOR DUPLICATION. THIS IS BEING SENT TO MULTIPLE LISTS. ATTENTION Digital Library Developers, Information Architects, Content=20 Managers, Lexicographers, and Indexers The Networked Knowledge Organization Sources/Systems (NKOS) Working Group=20 announces its 4th Workshop in Association with the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference= =20 on Digital Libraries CLASSIFICATION CROSSWALKS: BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER THE 4th NETWORKED KNOWLEDGE ORGANIZATION SOURCES/SYSTEMS (NKOS) WORKSHOP Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center Roanoke, VA June 28, 2001 Mapping between/among classification schemes is beneficial within an=20 organization that has a number of implicit schemes, between organizations=20 seeking to exchange information, and in a digital library context where=20 collections are organized by different classifications. This cross scheme=20 mapping could be done manually, but if many schemes are to be mapped, it may= =20 be desirable to provide automated tools and techniques to support the=20 process. This workshop will present research and projects that identify the= =20 state-of-the-practice, describe working tools, and outline the research=20 agenda for integrating and interoperating classification schemes. =20 The primary aim of the workshop is to raise the awareness of work that is=20 being conducted in the area of classification mapping/integration and to=20 identify areas for future research.=20 The workshop's objectives are:=20 =B7 To provide a forum for researchers in knowledge organization=20 sources/systems (KOSs), including thesauri, classification schemes,=20 taxonomies, ontologies, etc., to share their views, experiences and plans.=20 =B7 To raise the awareness of the state of the art.=20 =B7 To identify a research agenda concerning classification integration and=20 mapping in digital library research.=20 =B7 To exploit potentially useful theories, methodologies, and technologies.= =20 =B7 To provide a network for researchers, implementers and other interested=20 parties to establish collaborative efforts.=20 Participants will also be encouraged to give short presentations on other=20 activities related to the use of KOSs in Internet and intranet environments.= =20 Reports by NKOS task groups working on a mark-up language for KOSs and a=20 metadata scheme for a KOS registry are also scheduled. The preliminary program is available from the NKOS Web site at=20 http://nkos.slis.kent.edu. Registration and hotel information is available=20 from www.jcdl.org. The deadline for discounted registration is May 15. The=20 cost of the workshop is a maximum of $85 on or before May 15. The cost afte= r=20 May 15 is a maximum of $95. We would also encourage you to consider=20 attendance at the entire JCDL Meeting. For more information, contact Gail Hodge at gailhodge@aol.com or 610/789-676= 9.
