CONTENTS Introduction By Kurt Molholm, Chairman of FORUM Editorial Board In May, ICSTI's members gathered in Columbus,Ohio, USA for the Year 2000 General Assembly. This issue of Forum provides presentations given at the discussion session held in conjunction with the conference. On Friday, May 19, 2000, ICSTI members and invited guests discussed the critical subject of the potential economic impact resulting from the use of the digital environment on publishing and distribution. The discussion session brought together leaders in the information industry, some of whom are ICSTI members, together with the general ICSTI membership to discuss the Economic Impacts of Electronic Publishing. A Fond Farewell. ICSTI's Executive Secretary, Marthe Orfus, is retiring. September, 2000 marks the end of an era. ICSTI's Executive Secretary Marthe Orfus will retire and a new approach for administering ICSTI will be initiated. Through her many years of service to ICSTI Marthe touched the hearts of many. ICSTI and its members wish Marthe a joyful and rewarding retirement! Introducing ICSTI's new Executive Director and Administrative Support. Information International Associates, Inc. (IIa), headquartered in Oak Ridge, Tennesse (USA), is an information resource management consulting firm with a speciality in scientific and technical information management. IIa was awarded the contract to operate the ICSTI secretariat beginning September, 2000. The calibre of the ICSTI Executive Director is vital, since he will be the representative of ICSTI's mission both within ICSTI and to external audiences. For this position, ICSTI's Executive Director will be Barry Mahon who is well known to many ICSTI members. CAS Profile, The Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) hosted ICSTI's Year 2000 General Assembly. CAS's mission is to be the world's leader in meeting the needs of users of chemical and related scientific information. To fulfill this purpose, CAS monitors many types of publicly available documents, including approximately 8,000 journals from around the world and patents issued by 30 national patent offices plus the European Patent Office and WIPO. This information is produced in many different languages but all CAS abstracts and indexing are in English. Economic Impacts of Electronic Publishing. David Weisgerber, CASdweisgerb@cas.org put together an outstanding discussion session held in conjunction with the General Assembly.
