NEWS FROM INET2000 #4 The closing plenary of INET2000 opened with the awarding of the Jon Postel Award for outstanding contributions to the development of the Internet to Scott Bradner, key member of the IETF and Vice President of Standards for ISOC. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ken-ichi Ohmae, author of the book "The Invisible Economy". He equated the creation of wealth with the process that involves receiving information, adding value and re-emitting that information. In this context, he insisted that nation states are on the decline because such information-based wealth creation is difficult within the boundaries of countries. Nation states are at odds with the e-Economy. In replying to the question as to what has to be done, he banked on regions, saying that states have to enable regions to work with the global economy. According to him, the optimal regional unit is around 3 -10 million people, each requiring a well educated population, a set of stable policies, an IT infrastructure and appropriate cyberlaws. -- Howard Flack http://www.unige.ch/crystal/ahdf/Howard.Flack.html Laboratoire de Cristallographie Phone: 41 (22) 702 62 49 24 quai Ernest-Ansermet mailto:Howard.Flack@cryst.unige.ch CH-1211 Geneva 4, Switzerland Fax: 41 (22) 702 61 08
