Most recently a workshop was held in Paris in January. From this workshop came several recommendations for follow-up, one of which is an ICSTI review of the Open Archive Information System. The OAIS is a draft standard of the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems of the ISO. While it was developed specifically for the data community, it appears to have wide applicability and is being tested by several national libraries as the reference model for developing digital archiving systems. ICSTI has funded a review of the OAIS standard. The plan is to have a small group representative of the various stakeholder groups represented within ICSTI -- primary publishers, secondary publishers, scientific unions, national libraries, research institutes, etc. involved in this review in advance of the ICSTI Meeting in May. At that meeting, I will present the preliminary findings and we'll also have general discussion. >From these discussions, I will draft the comments to be submitted to ISO with regard to this standard. The comments are due to ISO in early June. This message is a call for participation -- if you are interested in digital archiving at your organization, please let me know if you or a member of your staff would be willing to help in this review. I would like to hear from you by 25 APRIL. This would mean looking at several white paper documents (or the whole standards if you are interested) and looking for how the wording of the model could better meet the needs for your stakeholder group. Also, does the high level architecture that is described fit with your current systems. That is, would you be able to interface with such as archive both as a contributor to it and as a user of it? Please let me know if you have interest in this as soon as possible (NO LATER THAN 25 APRIL). I will be providing follow-up materials to those who express interest, including a briefing that Don Sawyer from NASA and one of the authors of the reference model is planning to update for us. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your support. Gail Hodge Consultant to ICSTI Information International Associates, Inc. 312 Walnut Pl.
