Re: The "old" IUCr list managed by Martha Teeter. This general list was a marvelous first effort in using e-mail to pass around job, conference and other announcements in the days when few people had access to the newsgroups and the web did not exist. It is true that a significant minority of sites do not have access to a news (nntp) server but most do have access to the W3. The sort of information that Martha used to carry on her system is now all available on the W3 by way of CWW including a satisfactory "What's New" page. Moreover the IUCr sites are mirrored to allow easier access. The advantage of a newsgroup over a general mailing list is that no-one has to maintain a list of subscribers. Martha always said that she had a significant (5%) proportion of mails bounced back at each posting. People that are looking for a job will consult the CWW job and Whats new pages, and the others do not want to be bothered with job advertisements. I am not at all in favour of putting a general crystallography mail list into operation.
