Dear David I'm sorry to have been keeping quite such a low profile lately - we have been totally immersed in the project to make the journals available online. I did promise you two position papers for the COMCIFS meeting. The one on dictionary merging I am proposing to handle in this way. I have at last collected together the work John, Herbert and I did well over a year ago, and have assembled a "final report" which they are now reviewing. If they are happy with it and respond in the next day or two, I shall post it to the list so that everyone gets a chance to look at it before Glasgow, although I admit that time is very short and probably no-one will actually read it. If the review takes longer, I shall bring copies to Glasgow. I hope there won't be anything in it to provoke controversy; several of the recommendations have already been implemented in practice. On intellectual property rights, you will have seen the note I posted to the list and the subsequent correspondence. Looks like everyone (so far) is in broad agreement with the direction in which things are heading. Since you meet with the Executive Committee before either of the COMCIFS business meetings, I suggest that you take the following approach. You should advise th EC that we are proposing a revised policy document, and show them the current draft. The open meeting on 5 August is an opportunity to hear what others have to say. Perhaps I should circulate a copy of the revised draft (clearly marked as "DRAFT") to the participants of that meeting for comment? Certainly in my talk I shall invite the audience to proffer any concerns they may have, either at that point or in the open discussion section. The business meeting on 9 August should consider any comments or points arising from the open meeting and the comcifs-l discussion list, and propose a definitive text. If there is unanimity, there might be the possibility of putting this before the Executive for approval before the end of the Congress. Most likely there will need to be some extra drafting, and the final version will go to the Executive for postal ballot, ideally within a few weeks. I suppose it is possible that the Executive might delegate responsibility for the final version to COMCIFS when they interview you, but that's probably unlikely. Please let me know if there's anything else I desperately need to do! Best wishes Brian
